Finishes

Hand honed

The hand honing is done by hand rather than machines and therefore you will see abrasive and carborandum markings within the finish. The hand honed surface is smooth with fine (visible or little noticeable) circular lines. This kind of finish is mostly used for external floors.

Honed

The honing is created using different grated of abrasives under factory conditions. The honed surface gives a relative small and pale reflection (a matt-shiny finish depending on the stone). The surface is smooth matt, without visible grooves. This kind of finish is the most recommended and is applied for internal flooring in natural stone.

Polished

The polishing takes on the same machine as the honing but with even finer abrasives. By polishing a stone the colours are reinforced and the stone gets a reflecting surface with a high gloss. The degree of polish of the natural stone is mainly determined by the degree of polish of its mineral elements and by its texture. Therefore not every natural stone can be polished. This kind of finish is advised against by the Belgian Building & Research Institute for internal flooring in natural stone (cfr. Technical Guideline ref. TV213 page 17). But it’s perfectly usable for wall covering and all sorts of cut to size.

Honed and filled

The stone is honed (see above) and factory filled with natural stone dust to give an identical match for the surface pitting. Factory filling gives a durable surface finish.

Antiqued / Tumbled

The tiles are hand honed and afterwards tumbled to give the impression of a worn look, as if the stone has been used for years and has a natural patina from the start

Cushion edge

The stone is honed (see above) and  the edges are rubbed down to give a smooth rounded edge to the stone.

Chipped edge

The stone is honed (see above) and the edges are chipped to give an authentic worn look, ideal for rustic environments.

Rustico

The corners of the tiles are rounded off and the edges slightly sawn off at an angle. The top surface is honed. The floor has a rustic radiation and therefore suitable for a classic interior.

Sablino

The tiles are first hand honed, then flamed and afterwards brushed. This is a semi rough finish which feels very natural, easy maintenance and less sensitive to scratches.

Satino

The tiles are first honed, then flamed and afterwards brushed. A semi rough appearance that’s anti-slip, but you can walk on it barefoot, easy maintenance and less sensitive to scratches.

Vieux Manoir

The surface of the tile is rustically distressed by a combination of hand honing, milling and brushing also the edges are highly distressed. The floor has a rustic appearance and breathes out the atmosphere of ancient Burgundy buildings.

Brushed

The tiles are sawn, hand honed and brushed.

Bush hammered

This finish of the stone is obtained by treating the surface with a bush hammer or prong hammer (manual) or with a hydraulic hammer (mechanical). Bush hammering wipes out all traces of previous finishing. The look of the manufactured surface depends on the number of pointy bulges on the hammer. The distance between the small numerous pits depends on the distance in between the points.
If done mechanically the pits are spread evenly on the whole surface.
